"Something has gone crack": J.R.R. Tolkien"s experiences in the Great War (1914-1918) can be traced in his writings, most prominently in his masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. Much has been written concerning the impact of his time in the war on his literary work, including such significant publications as John Garth's Tolkien and the Great War (2003), Janet Brennan Croft"s War and the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien (2004) and edited collection Baptism of Fire (2015), Joseph Loconte's A Hobbit, a Wardrobe and a Great War (2015), and Margaret Hiley's The Loss and the Silence (2011).
